Bark beetles pose a serious threat to our forests. They bore into the wood or bark to create breeding chambers between the wood and the bark. This interrupts the tree's sap flow, causing it to dry out and eventually die. Reproduction Potential of the Bark Beetle
Both the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) and the six-toothed bark beetle (Pityogenes chalcographus) have an enormous reproduction potential. Depending on weather conditions, they can produce 2 to 3 generations per year under the current climate conditions. In addition, each generation can produce multiple sibling broods, as parent beetles leave the breeding galleries after laying eggs and continue reproducing elsewhere.
A single female produces an average of 60 offspring (egg reserve up to 200 eggs):
1st Generation: 60 beetles + sibling broods
2nd Generation: 1,800 beetles + sibling broods + broods of sibling broods
3rd Generation: 54,000 beetles + sibling broods
This results in a reproduction rate of more than 1:100,000 per year – leading to up to 54,000,000 (54 million!) beetles!
